We have four different type of meetings: Show and Tell, Knowledge Night, Photo Shoots and Click & Natter.
Show and Tell
Held every third Thursday, apart from August, these meetings are a chance to share and talk about our images and give and receive friendly, constructive comments and advice. Members may submit up to three digital images (and/or prints at some meetings) on that month's theme and a single Image of the Month of any subject, taken since the previous Show and Tell meeting. Meetings start at 7pm in the Baptist Schoolroom, Guilsborough Road, NN6 7AD, then at 7:15pm we start showing the images with a break midway for refreshments. Each month's theme is listed below and guidance on how to submit images is at the bottom of this page. Non-members are welcome to attend two of these meetings free of charge.
Knowledge Night
Usually taking place on or around the fourth Thursday, apart from August, Knowledge Nights are a great way to increase your photographic skills, experiment, or just have some photo fun. They include tutorials, demonstrations and talks on various aspects of photography - some delivered by professional photographers - to opportunities to ask for advice or an explanation about any aspect of photography. Meetings will be held in the Baptist Schoolroom unless otherwise advised and the list of subjects is below. Non-members may purchase tickets to attend talks by speakers.
Photo Shoots
We try to arrange a couple of visits a year to photographically interesting locations to allow for exploration and practice with like-minded people. Occasionally these are organised with other photo clubs which allows us to meet and exchange ideas and tips.
Click & Natter
This is an informal gathering of members who meet for a coffee at the Pytchley (one of the sponsors of our Photo Show) in West Haddon at 10am, usually the first Wednesday in the month. Discussion covers photography, previous and forthcoming WHPC club meetings and much else. The dates for these meetings are below.
Take a look below for our meetings and events. We're currently preparing a handy Programme Handout to download for easy reference.
For more information on any of our events or if you’ve a talk you think we’d be interested in hearing please email the Programme Secretary - events@whphoto.club .
Our first Show and Tell meeting of the year uses as its theme the important compositional device of Leading Lines. Sometimes referred to as 'Lead In Lines' it's a way of drawing the viewer's attention into an image and directing it to the subject by using something in the photo that acts as a line towards it. There's an option this month to submit up to three prints in lieu of digital images. This fun-packed meeting also includes our AGM.
We're still finalising details for this Knowledge Night which is likely to be a talk via Zoom from a professional photographer. More details will be provided closer to the event.
Who doesn't wish for a bit of peace and tranquility in this world that always seems to be screaming for our attention. This month we're hoping our members will be able to submit up to three images that will help instil some stillness and calm. And relax...
This will be an informal presentation from one of our members to suggest ways of using available light to enhance your photos. Often as photographers we have to take what light we're given, but there are ways we can use this light to best advantage, e.g. through side or back-lighting.
In their song Street Life Roxy Music ask, 'who knows what you'll see, who you might meet?', which sums up our theme of Street Life pretty succinctly. There's plenty of subjects to photograph on the street and it's a popular genre because of this, taking in people, buildings, and the interaction of these subjects with light (see February's Knowledge Night) and each other. There's an option this month to submit up to three prints in lieu of digital images.
For our first in person talk this year we welcome a new face to us, Ashley Franklin, to present a talk exploring the history, style and impact of portrait, fashion, industrial, war, travel, press, social documentary and street photography. Ashley will illustrate his talk with the work of photo greats like Avedon, Bailey, Beaton, Bloomfield, Capa, Contreras, McCullin, McCurry, Karsh, Leibowitz, McCullin, Salgado and Winston Link. There's plenty here to inspire us in our own work.
We're turning up the volume to 11 for this month's theme of Rock. Whether it's photos of mountains or music it's covered this month and we're sure our members will find many other interpretations in the images they submit.
One of the aims of West Haddon Photo Club is to encourage people to explore the creative opportunities of their cameras (and this includes mobile phones) by switching away from the Auto Mode. This is why we've invited along nature photographer Bob Brind-Sarch to give his talk 'From the ordinary to the extraordinary part 1 – Beyond Auto Mode – Taking creative control of your camera', which pretty much sums up the aim.
Landscapes, cityscapes, starscapes, beachscapes - they'll all be at home in May's theme of 'Scapes'. Why not use the advice given in Bob Brind-Sarch's talk last month to take your camera out of Auto and take some stunning images? There's an option this month to submit up to three prints in lieu of digital images.
In our Skills Surgerys we hold informal sessions when our members can raise questions about photography that are causing them to scratch their heads. We'll cover equipment use, camera settings, editing, lenses etc. What the sessions cover are set by our members, so if there's anything you want covering ask a committee member at any meeting.
Corners, nooks and crannies are often the resting place for dust and cobwebs, but we're sure our members will be able to produce images containing something much more interesting.
Working in monochrome Colin Trow-Poole produces striking fine-art images. He says he makes photos, '...with strong narrative power... that remains consistent irrespective of the photos I am taking. Often the subjects I photograph already have a strong story telling/documentary element'. Colin will illustrate his talk with examples of his work, some of which can be seen on his website.

With the, hopefully, better weather we'll be organising a photoshoot somewhere local so we can combine photography withe a social event. We're still working to finalise details on this outing and will provide an update in due course.
There are no Show and Tell or Knowledge Night meetings during August, instead we have an August Challenge. This is where we set our members a theme and challenge them to take up to three photos in the period between our July and September meetings. 2025's August Challenge is yet to be set, so watch this space.
This month's theme of Colour should give our members plenty of scope for their images. As this is the first meeting after our summer break we're sure we'll see colourful photos taken whilst the members have been on their travels and outings.
Planning is still underway for September's Knowledge Night. When details have been firmed up they will appear here and will be emailed to our members and everyone on our mailing list. If you want to be kept abreast of our activities send an email to events@whphoto.club and we'll add you to the list.
Our headline event of the year. Photo Show provides a unique opportunity for local photographers and those from neighbouring counties to showcase their work to the public. 2025 will be our 11th Photo Show and there'll be an exhibition of prints throughout our venue in the lovely All Saints' church in West Haddon, as well as a rolling display of digital images. There's no charge to submit photos or for admission. Take a look at our page for 2024's Photo Show.
Shadows. Not the instrumental pop group from the 1960s but the dark area caused by something obstructing a light source and the theme for this month's Show and Tell. In photography shadows can be used to frame a subject, directing the viewer's attention, or to inject an element of mystery and pose questions. There's an option this month to submit up to three prints in lieu of digital images.
We're pleased that Steve Cole has agreed to come and talk to us about his project to record the last days of Ratcliffe on Soar power station. Steve is a semi-pro photographer based near Nottingham and he's been uploading some beautifully atmospheric images to his Flickr Photostream. This talk will be one of Steve's first ever speaking engagements and we're certain he'll be in demand in the future.
The use of mirrors, or something that reflects, is an often-used compositional tool in photography. It can be used to give the illusion of space, to capture candid scenes or to convey feelings of calm and serenity by using reflections in water in landscapes.
Planning is still underway for November's Knowledge Night. When details have been firmed up they will appear here and will be emailed to our members and everyone on our mailing list. If you want to be kept abreast of our activities send an email to events@whphoto.club and we'll add you to the list.
With this Show and tell meeting so close to Christmas and the end of the year we're asking our members to submit their favourite three photos theyve taken in 2025 that they've not already submitted. There's an option this month to submit up to three prints in lieu of digital images. Instead of our usual Image of the Month section we'll be having some festive nibbles and drinks.
Digital Images
Up to four digital images may be submitted. Up to three on the monthly theme (see above) that can have been taken at any time, plus one Image of the Month that doesn't need to follow the theme but must have been taken since the previous meeting. These images will be shown and discussed at the monthly meeting.
When submitting digital images please follow the points below:
We prefer you to upload the images to Dropbox or email them to members@whphoto.club by 9pm the evening before the meeting. If you're unable to upload or email you can copy them onto a USB stick or CD and hand them to a committee member before the cut-off time.
Your images must be in JPEG format, smaller than 4Mb in size. If you need help resizing, have a look at our tutorial Reducing Image File Sizes with JPEG-Optimizer).
The filename should be in the format 1_Name of Image_Name of Photographer, e.g. 1_Silver Machine_Dave Brock. Use the prefix 2 or 3 for your 2nd and 3rd theme images and IOM as a prefix for your image of the month.
The images must not have been submitted before.
Prints
At the meetings when members may submit prints as well as digital images for the theme, please follow the points below:
Up to three prints may be submitted in lieu of digital images.
