As the first signs of autumn make themselves known with the nights drawing in, we had the suitably shady theme of Shadows. Not only can shadows be used as a compositional tool to shape the light in an image and direct the viewer's attention, they can also hide elements to create an element of mystery.

Shadows occur anywhere so there was a diverse selection of subjects and scenes, each member interpreting the theme in their own way. Some images showed how shadows framed the light, others chose to focus on the shapes shadows created. This month's favourite photo was Pia-pia-piano by Alastair Bell, an imaginative interpretation of the theme, with the shadows cast by light through a window echoing the piano artwork on the wall.

This month we had our bimonthly theme prints section, which attracted a large number of entries, possibly encouraged by our Photo Show. Shadows cast by trees and parts of buildings featured, with the favourite print showing intricate shadows cast by light streaming through a Lattice Screen Taj Mahal by Kevan Brassington.

The image of the month section, photos taken by members since the last Show and Tell meeting, which, unlike many of our theme photos, were in colour - autumn colours especially in a couple of images. Others showed something that has been sadly missing recently - sunlight - we basked in the reflected light of images taken in Malta and Italy. The favourite image was another shadow, of sorts, a man silhouetted against an illuminated wall, broken by stripes in Adrian Chandler's Pinstripes.
